Introduction

The use of rigid orthoses has been the main stay of orthotic provision for many years. However the use of rigid orthotics in neurological dysfunction is being challenged by new theories and outcomes reported using Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric (Lycra®) Orthoses. This full day course will explore one of the innovative treatment options increasingly used in paediatric and adult neurological dysfunction – Dynamic Movement Orthoses. The syllabus will develop understanding of the possible mechanisms o function and provide a basis for prescriptive solutions to many of the presentations commonly seen in this arena providing evidence based practice.

Aims

This course aims to:

Highlight the relevant neurology behind the use of Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthoses ( through pre course reading)

Provide a brief overview of the various mechanisms at work in the treatment.

Explain assessment criteria and measuring protocols

Provide evidence of outcomes

Discuss options for prescription based on assessment

Identify suitable outcome measures to provide for clinical audit and reasoning

Understand the need for a multi-disciplinary team approach

By the end of this event the participant will be able to:

Understand the reasoning behind the use of Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthoses

Assess, prescribe and measure dynamic movement orthoses

Understand the importance of the multi-disciplinary team approach.

Identify and show outcome measures

This course is relevant to all healthcare clinicians involved in the treatment of neurological dysfunction both in paediatric and adult populations.
